Artificial Intelligence has been reshaping the way rewrite and search for things on the internet, but it looks like Meta may have another use for the technology. According to a recent report by the Financial Times, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company might bring AI bots on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

The report states that to retain its user base and attract a younger audience, the company will roll out a bunch of new AI products, including one that helps users create AI characters on both Instagram and Facebook.

Connor Hayes, the vice-president of product for generative AI at Meta told the publication that they “expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do”.

He went on to say that just like our profiles, these AI bots will have bios and profile pictures and will be even able to generate and share content powered by AI. As it turns out, Meta will be developing the AI-generated characters using AI Studio.

For those not in the loop, Meta’s AI Studio allows users to create an AI character based on their interests and even create an AI extension of themselves. While the product is currently limited to the United States, Meta plans to expand its availability sometime this year.

While the decision may not be welcome by the majority of social media users, it does have its fair share of advantages. For example, if someone shares fake news on Facebook, an AI bot could help flag it and warn others that the information shared is false. However, the opposite could be true as well.
